Vientiane, Laos: King Setthathirath Statue in front of the Pha That Luang, the great sacred stupa, golden stupa. Setthathirath (1534-1571) is considered one of the greatest kings of Laos. Son of King Photisarath and of a Thai princess, he succeeded Photisarath as head of Lan Xang in 1548. A great builder, he is said to have founded  Vientiane in 1560. In 1570 he successfully defended his country against the Burmese conqueror Bayinnaung , who had captured Chiang Mai in 1558 and Ayutthaya in 1569.
