The stunning maze of alleys, stairs and stone houses in the old town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as the 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones). The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period.
