Picture of the Altes Rathaus, the old city hall of Dusseldorf, Germany, with a focus on the Jan Wilhelm statue. The Jan Wellem monument on the market square in Düsseldorf's Altstadt district was begun by the Italian-Flemish sculptor Gabriel Grupello in 1703 and erected in 1711. The baroque equestrian statue depicts Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg , the Elector Palatinate and Duke of Jülich-Berg , known as Jan Wellem by the people of Düsseldorf who spoke Low Franconian at the time . The plastic, which Grupello created on behalf of his electoral employer, is today one of Düsseldorf's landmarks.
