Many small, white flowers of the Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), comprising a single inflorescence, growing in the margins of an agricultural field in central Scotland. The species is native to many areas in the northern hemisphere and has been used by many peoples both to feed livestock and because its essential oils contain many medicinal properties and include the painkiller aspirin.

$Vanessa cardui is a very common migrant that arrives from Africa every summer. Numbers fluctuate annually, depending on the reproduction in Africa.\nThe species is most likely to be seen in open areas were the vegetation has a mosaic structure, such as waste land, fallow ground and pasture land.\nit uses various species of Carduus, Arctium and Cirsium both as larval food plant and as a source of nectar.\n\nThis is a common Migration Butterfly in the Netherlands.$

$Coenonympha pamphilus is a common resident in the Netherlands. At present, C. pamphilus is as common as it was in 1991.\nHabitat: It is a species of open, nutrient-poor grasslands, dunes, roadside verges, gardens and neglected corners of fields, preferring a vegetation with a mosaic structure.\nFlying Season: It flies in two generations, the first from the end of may until mid-July. The second until the begin of September.\n\nThis is a common Species in the Netherlands in the described Habitats.$

The Marbled White is a distinctive and attractive black and white butterfly, unlikely to be mistaken for any other species. In July it flies in areas of unimproved grassland and can occur in large numbers on southern downland. It shows a marked preference for purple flowers such as Wild Marjoram, Field Scabious, thistles, and knapweeds. Adults may be found roosting halfway down tall grass stems.
