The majestic main altar inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major), located between the Rione Monti (Monti district) and the Rione Esquilino (Esquiline district), in the historic heart of Rome. Built between 1608 and 1615 at the behest of Pope Paul V, this chapel is decorated with paintings and sculptures by many artists, including Pietro Bernini and Guido Reni. In the center, above the altar, an Eastern Roman-style painting of the Virgin Mary much revered by the citizens of Rome and dated between the 12th and 13th centuries.
