Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) is a North American flowering plant in the sunflower tribe of the aster family. It is widespread across the western United States and western Canada. It is drought tolerant and grows in diverse habitats from grassland to mountain forest and desert. The plant’s native range extends from British Columbia to the Mojave Desert of California and as far east as the Black Hills of South Dakota. The round to oval shaped leaves are covered in fine hair. The distinctive orange-yellow leaves make the plant easy to identify. These arrowleaf balsamroot were photographed in Cowiche Canyon near Yakima, Washington State, USA.

The Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata) is a wildflower and member of the Asteraceae family.  It is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The Desert Marigold is bright yellow and has a daisy-like appearance.  The flowers are about 1-2 inches in diameter and have a distinct, sweet fragrance that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The leaves are grayish-green and somewhat hairy.  The plant blooms in the spring and grows wild in dry, rocky areas and along roadsides. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate extreme heat and drought conditions.  Historically the Desert Marigold has been used by Native American tribes for medicinal purposes.  These Desert Marigolds were photographed in the Canada del Oro Wash in Oro Valley near Tucson, Arizona, USA.
