Rock forest in Chiricahua National Monument
Volcanic rock stacked atop existing boulders form an exterior cliff dwelling wall that runs along the side of of a high desert promentory. The Sinagua Indian tribe that selected this site did so for its easily defensible position. Below the wall is a sheer cliff dropping to a long steep hill that descends to a dry riverbed - allowing no access from that side. This wall includes small portals where rocks were omitted so that arrows could be fired through them, permitting concealment from enemy attack. The wall has contains a narrow opening for egress, and the climb to safe level terrain is difficult. Site selection was critical for the Sinagua, and perfectly executed here. This culture combined hunting and gathering with agriculture, but the latter was challenging in this arrid wilderness terrain. The exact site location, which requires considerable effort to reach, is intentionally omitted. Its estimated age dates to 1300 AD - 1400 AD. Nambung is a national park in Western Australia, 200 km northwest of Perth, Australia . The park contains the Pinnacles Desert which is an area with thousands of limestone formations called pinnacles. The pillars are the weathered and eroded fragments of limestone beds composed of deposited marine organisms such as coral and molluscs. Some of the tallest pinnacles reach heights of up to 3.5m above the yellow sand base.

Natural limestone pillars rise from the yellow sandy desert. The pillars are formed by deposits of sea shells and algal, calcrete and paleosoil or cemented pipe and tube of millions of years of erosion. The park is a popular tourist attraction.
Red and pink granite formations on the Hazards, a series of jagged granite peaks in Freycinet Peninsula, an outcrop of wild, pristine coast land on Tasmania's east coast. It is part of Freycinet National Park.
Pinnacles are fairly rough limestone rock formations that have their origins in accumulations of shells of marine mollusks from an earlier geological epoch. The shells fell apart and fell into the limestone-rich sands, which ended up inland forming large mobile dunes.

These desert pinnacles in southwestern Australia are believed to have been formed under the sea around 25,000 years ago. When the sea receded, a fascinating landscape of diversely shaped limestone pillars was further shaped by wind and erosion.
