A remnant of the Upper Castle from the Middle Ages, the Gediminas' Tower stands on this iconic hill. This hill is where the Baltic Way began. Here in Vilnius, one of the longest human chains in history began as a form of peaceful protest. Approximately two million people held hands simultaneously, forming a connected line across all three of the Baltic States, from Lithuania up to Latvia and Estonia. This was a massively powerful protest for the independence of the states and it even led to the Soviet Union acknowledging their crimes against the Baltic States and the three countries gained independence as a result. This historical landmark is a powerful reminder of this inspiring movement.
