Auschwitz, Poland - March 28, 2008: Main gate of Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz I) concentration camp in Poland, where 1.1 million people where killed (90% Jews) by the Nazi army during the World War II (1940-1945). The Soviet troop liverated the camp on January 27 in 1945. In the following decades it became a symbol of the Holocaust. In 1947, Poland founded a museum on the site of Auschwitz I and II, and in 1979 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fenced abandoned houses with barred windows in ghost town Manheim near surface mine Hambach in North Rhine-Westfalia. The mining and energy company RWE has plans to expand the lignite mine Hambach.  For that reason the village has been evicted since 2012. Many residents now live in the new erected village Manheim-Neu.
