A Clark’s Nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), a member of the jay and crow family (Corvidae), in central Oregon. This bird, named after explorer William Clark, is found in western North America from southern Canada to the pine forests of northern Baja California. It feeds almost exclusively on pine seeds, which it stores in caches of up to 15 seeds, and a total of up to 98,000 seeds have been documented for an individual. The nutcracker can remember where most these seeds are hidden, even under snow drifts, and utilizes them to survive the winter months. The forgotten ones are important in germinating new trees. It also consumes berries and insects, particularly when feeding its young.
