Lararium fresco in atrium of ancient tavern, Via dell Abbondanza, Pompeii, Italy.\nIt consists of a lararium dedicated to the protectors of the household ( Lari ), the Genius protector of the owner, as well as the god of trade ( Mercury ) and the god of wine ( Dionysus ). The house is at the rear, interconnected with the shop, decorated with precious frescoes and a triclinium for outdoor dining.\n\nThe thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus opens on via dell’Abbondanza and represents social mobility in Pompeii in Roman times, where merchants and craftsmen also held a high social status, reserved only to landowners in older times. Drinks and hot food were served in this place, as the name indicates, stored in large jars placed in the richly decorated masonry counter of the tavern.

A priestess stands at left with a sacrificial bull.\n\nA detail from a sacrificial scene shows a bull being brought to the omphalos - Made up of a stone and a snake it represents the navel of the world - Apollo plays the zither.\n\nThe ancient Greeks also used omphalos to refer to a sacred, rounded stone in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi that was supposed to mark the center of the earth.
