The common names of strelitzia reginae include crane flower and bird of paradise. It got such names for its exotic flowers that look like the head of a crane.

The bird of paradise flower is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 80 to 200 centimeters. It forms clump-like stands with its branched rhizomes. The inflorescence is partially covered by a beak-shaped, bract (the so-called spathe), which usually has red edges.

A male Wire-crested Thorntail Hummingbird is seen perching on a branch of a Stachytarpheta flower.  The male pictured has a glittering green crown with a thin hair-like crest. Its gorget is iridescent green, the flanks brownish with a white patch, and the rest of the underparts black. The tail is steely blue with white feather shafts, deeply forked, and the outer feathers are very narrow which with the crest give the species its common name
