Purple Wildflowers
Ajuga reptans, commonly known as bugle
Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is a small, blue / purple wildflower, shown here at considerable magnification. It is a common weed of grasslands and the edges of arable fields. Before the introduction of hops it was used in brewing beer, and it also has medicinal and therapeutic uses. Ground ivy is toxic if ingested in large amounts, either fresh or in hay, but only horses are affected. Most grazing animals avoid it because it has a bitter taste. It has a plethora of common names that includes gill-over-the-ground, creeping charlie, alehoof, tunhoof, catsfoot, field balm, and run-away-robin.
