$This shallow part of the Banda Neira reef lies inbetween the two lava flows, so it was not destroyed when reef was significantly destroyed 1988 during a volcanic eruption and the flow of lava over it. \nThere are a lot of Isopora corals in the foreground, a Porites coral at the right side and a lot of Acropora coral behind. There is a large school of Ternate Chromis Chromis ternatensis. The species occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa and Tonga, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia in a depth range from 2-36m, max. length 10.5cm. \nThere are many other fish species to see, Triggerfishes, Parrotfishes, Surgeonfishes, Damselfishes, Butterflyfishes. \nBanda Neira between the two lava flows, Indonesia, 4°30'21.234 S 129°52'33.822 E at 4m depth$

Shallow swimming and snorkeling beach in extinct volcanic crater

Coral reefs are the one of earths most complex ecosystems, containing over 800 species of corals and one million animal and plant species. Here we see a shallow coral reef consisting of hard Staghorn Coral (Acropora) supporting shoals of Indian Damselfish (Dascyllus cameus). They are using the reef as a natural protection from predators. This coral, although on the whole healthy, is showing signs of distress. 75% of the worlds coral reefs are now classed as 'Threatened,' with 60% of most reefs having local damage from anchors, overfishing, coral bleaching, disease and pollution. Here the tips of the coral are beginning to bleach.
