The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark (Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco) commonly known as Saint Mark's Basilica) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. It is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has only been the city's cathedral since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice.

A splendid view of the mosaics decorating the apse inside the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (Our Lady in Trastevere), in the historic heart of Rome. This Romanesque-style basilica, founded by Pope Callixtus I around 220 AD, is one of the oldest churches in Rome. In the upper part of the apse a 12th century mosaic depicts the Virgin and Christ seated on the same throne, while the mosaics in the lower part of the apse depict the life of the Virgin Mary, by the medieval artist Pietro Cavallini (1259–1330). Trastevere is an iconic district of the Eternal City, due to the presence of countless artistic and historical treasures, monuments and ancient Romanesque and Baroque churches, but also for its squares and alleys to be explored freely, where it is easy to find typical restaurants, pubs, small shops of artisans and scenes of daily life with the original Roman soul. $Rome, Italy, June 15 -- The stunning Byzantine mosaic made to decorate the interior of the great apse of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo fuori le Mura) in the Ostiense district of Rome. The mosaics depicting Christ the Redeemer surrounded by St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Luke and St. Andrew, were made during the papacy of Honorius III (1216-1227) by the artisans who had worked on the mosaics of the Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice.\nBuilt in 324 A.D. at the behest of the Roman emperor Constantine on the tomb of the Apostle Paul, the Basilica was enlarged to its present form starting from 386 AD. by Emperor Theodosius I and was consecrated in 402 AD. by Pope Innocent I. This sacred place for Christianity was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980. The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of the four ancient major basilicas of Rome, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major.
