Low to short, generally sprawling hairy annual; stems branched. Leaves oval-triangular, mostly alternate except for the lowermost, pale green, coarsely toothed, short-stalked.\nFlowers bright blue, 8-12mm, the lowermost petal usually white, solitary on slender stalks at the base of the upper leaves. Capsule 2-lobed, borne on recurved stalks, the lobes diverging, keeled.\nHabitat: Cultivated ground on a variety of soil types, locally abundant. Flowering throughout the year.\nDistribution: Naturalized through Europe, since early in the nineteenth century.\n\nThis is a common Species on the described Habitat and other Rural Places in the Netherlands.

This is an extreme close up of a tiny plant. The term 'officinalis' in the Latin name indicates a former medical use, and it is said that this plant was used in Ireland to relieve nipple soreness. It has also been associated with treatments for gastrointestinal problems and coughing. Mitcham Common, Surrey.

Flowers lilac-blue, with darker veins, 6-8mm, borne in solitary or paired dense pyramidical , long-stalked racemes; bracts linear. Capsule oval to slightly heart-shaped, longer than the calyx, hairy.\nHabitat: Woods and heaths, grassland, generally on rather dry soils, to 2150m.\nFlowering Season: Throughout Europe, except Spitsbergen.\n\nThis Picture is made during a long weekend in the Eifel (Germany) in June 2019.
