$Short to medium, slightly hairy annual or biennial. Basal leaves forming a rosette, elliptical toothed or untoothed; stem leaves usually untoothed, unstalked. Flowers white, 3mm. Fruits linear, 5-20mm, hairless, not flattened.\nHabitat: Arable and cultivated land, waste places, banks, walls and hedgerows, often on rather dry sandy soils.\nFlowering Season: March-October.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except for much of the north, the Faeroes and Iceland, often abundant.\n\nThis is a very common weed in the Netherlands in the described Habitats.$

White melilot (Melilotus albus), a tall wildflower, is also known as white sweet clover (see below for other common names). One possible reason for the second name may be its forming of a sweet-smelling hay. It was introduced to the Americas as cattle fodder, and has established itself widely, particularly in damp places. While it is considered as an invasive species in the Americas, since it out-competes brave native species, it is still recognised as a good nitrogen-fixing clover, and as a species favoured by honey bees. White melilot has typical three-pronged clover leaves that are quite narrow and also serrate-edged. Other names for white melilot (as listed in Wikipedia) are Bokhara clover, honey clover, tree clover, sweet clover and white-flowered sweet clover. $Stout medium to tall, rather bristly biennial or short-lived perennial, to 2.5m; stem hollow, ridged. Leaves pinnate with often 5 broad, lobed and toothed segments, bristly; upper leaves with large inflated bases. Flowers white, rarely pink, 5-10mm, in large umbels up to 15cm across with 12-25 rays; petals of outer flowers very unequal; bracts few or absent. Fruit elliptical to rounded, 7-10mm, flattened and broadly winged.\nHabitat: Open woodland, banks and rough grassland.\nFlowering Season: April-September.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the extreme north.\n\nGenerally the commonest umbellifer flowering during the (late) summer and quite variable.$
