Cayenne, French Guiana: Victor Schoelcher square, intersection of rue Louis-Blanc, rue du Docteur-Sainte-Rose and rue Christophe-Colomb - late 19th century sculpture (1896) by Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905). Victor Schœlcher was a French abolitionist, writer, politician and journalist, known for his leading role in the abolition of slavery in France in 1848, during the Second Republic. During the 2010s the statue was criticized by woke sectors for its paternalistic aesthetic and the invisibility of the role of slaves in abolition, being taken down and placed in storage in 2020.
