Gassin is a French commune located near Saint-Tropez, in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.\n\nPopulated at least since the Neolithic, the territory is in the area of Massaliote influence then under the domination of the Romans who left the traces of several rustic villas. The perched village was built on a rocky outcrop after the expulsion of the Saracens, with the aim of escaping the insecurity of the seaside. It developed little over the following centuries, retaining its typical rural character of the Mediterranean basin with the dominant culture of olive trees, wheat and vines. In the 19th century, the cork industry and sericulture did little to change the local economy. The installation of a torpedo factory at the start of the 20th century had a lasting influence on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, with the factory employing over a thousand people.\n\nA rural town retaining its wine-growing and forestry character, Gassin has seen its economy increasingly influenced since the end of the 19th century by tourism. Originally, the local authorities showed little interest in this sector, leading in particular to the splitting of two important districts erected into a municipality: Cavalaire and La Croix. In the 21st century, Gassin was home to many establishments, mainly top-of-the-range, linked to tourism, including a polo club and a golf course, and developed a specific welcome marked by nature, numerous activities and wine tourism.
