The Capitoline Hill (Latin: Collis Capitolinus pronounced, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in the Roman dialect. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo.

A suggestive sunset view of the Trajan's Column, in the Trajan's Forum, and the National Monument of the Altare della Patria, in the historic heart of Rome. The area of the Roman Imperial Forums is one of the most iconic in Rome, visited by thousands of tourists every year, with the largest area of archaeological excavations in the world. In particular, the Trajan's column was built in 113 AD to celebrate and glorify the victory of the Emperor Trajan over the Dacian people and the conquest of Dacia, today's Romania. The national monument of the Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, between the north side of the Capitoline Hill and the central Piazza Venezia. Inside is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all the official Italian civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
