Spoleto, Umbria, Italy, October 20 -- A wide angle view of the beautiful Duomo, in the historic heart of the medieval city of Spoleto, in the Umbria region, central Italy. The Duomo, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), was built starting from 1067 in Romanesque and Lombard style and consecrated in 1198. Spoleto was one of the major centers of the Umbrian people, before being conquered and becoming an important colony of Rome. In medieval times it was subjected to the dominion of the Lombards, becoming a Duchy. Spoleto, one of the most visited medieval cities in Italy, hosts the Festival of the Two Worlds, a world-famous event that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians, classical dancers and opera singers every year. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. The dome of the Cattedrale di San Feliciano (Cathedral of St Felician) emerges from the alleys of the medieval town of Foligno in Umbria, in central Italy. The Cathedral, or Duomo di Foligno, was built in Romanesque and Gothic style in the period 1133–1201 and dedicated to Felician who died in Foligno in 251 AD. Founded since pre-Roman times by the Umbrian people, Foligno was dominated by the Lombards and later by the Duchy of Spoleto. In the Middle Ages this city strategically placed between Spoleto and Perugia was an important trading center along the ancient Via Flaminia. A suggestive glimpse of the Duomo of Gualdo Tadino, a medieval town between Spoleto and Gubbio, in the Italian region of Umbria.
