The archaeological site of Sagalassos is located in southwest Turkey, near the present town of Ağlasun (Burdur province); roughly 110 km to the north of the well-known port and holiday resort of Antalya. The ancient city was founded on the south facing slopes of the Taurus mountain range and was the metropolis of the Roman province of Pisidia. Next to its mountainous landscape, a series of lakes form another typical feature of the regional geography. Today this region is known as the Lake District.

Matera (Basilicata, Italy) is located on a canyon, which defines Matera’s landscape and architecture. Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, established by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, the town is famous for its cave dwellings. The Sassi di Matera is the ancient town of houses carved into the rock. People lived here until the 1950s, but then they were moved because the place needed restoration. Today pubs, restaurants and hotels are found in this location.

An idyllic cityscape of the old town of Matera, known worldwide as the 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones Hills). In the image the Sasso Caveoso hill with the majestic facade and the bell tower of the Duomo, or Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna and Sant'Eustachio, built in the Apulian Romanesque style in the 13th century. The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in 16:9 and high definition format.
