Keywords: outdoor (Photo Source: EBAY listing, Public Domain) This vintage postcard (circa late 1800's-early 1900's) depicts the Redemptorist Novitiate, located in Ilchester, Maryland. It was a Roman-Catholic school which prepared young men for the priesthood. It would also be known at Mt. Saint Clemons and St. Mary's College during its existence. The "Lower House" of the college was held in the former Ellicott Tavern & Hotel, which succumbed to fire in 1968. This is the white building depicted in the postcard. The B&O railroad station no longer exists, but the staircase to the campus remains to this day. The Bollman Truss Bridge to the right is no longer present, but its abutments now anchor the Swinging Bridge at the entrance to the Patapsco State Park. The railroad bridge at the center still exists, which carries the B&O Railroad trains thru the Ilchester Tunnel. Finally, the factory on the banks of the Patapsco River is the late Thistle Mill, whose later iteration would be the Simpkins Paper Mill. Interestingly, the Simpkins Paper Mill ruins were just bulldozed over in 2013 as part of Maryland's Department of the Environment cleanup program, which forces owners of derelict properties to take responsibility for their assets and how they impact the environment. The Patapsco Heritage Greenway, a non-profit group, hopes that it will be absorbed as part of the Patapsco State Park. Currently, the site is used for well-needed parking for patrons.
