Getting to visit the Western Wall on Good Friday (or Purim depending on your religion) was one of the most memorable experiences abroad. It was one of the most gut wrenching and visceral trips because I got to see the conflict first hand and see the privileges I receive because of my US citizenship. Jerusalem is the Holy Land for many and I, a spiritual person raised Buddhist, got to visit just because I wanted to. Some people live their entire lives and will never have the opportunity or ability to go. It is that lesson and so many others that are the reason to go abroad. I learned how to communicate and connect with people without a mutual language. I learned the value and importance of water. More importantly learned what it is like to live without water. I also learned that I might be as American as can be, but my skin color tells a different story. Those reasons are just on the top of the list...
