Between the opening of the bridge in 1937 and the opening of the '401' Freeway in June 1964, this highway was the original Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy. 1) route to the Fraser Valley and the B.C. interior and the Pacific Highway (Hwy. 99) route to the U.S. border.
