Yesterday I was clearing out a big wardrobe that used to belong to my kid brother. Now I can say with complete candour that I was expecting to come across some stuff that would be...shall we say...colourful, and I did. But jammed in amongst all unmentionables that a young man of a certain age collects was this, which is a life size plastic lobster. In a mix of bewilderment and hilarity, I put this one down to another night of drunken scanvenging, evoking strong memories of the time when I memorably came down the stairs one morning to find a wishing well in the hall. But no! This one has even more of a back story. When I quizzed him on it last night for an explanation I was surprised to hear his girlfriend step in. The rationale lies in an episode of Friends (episode 2.14 trivia fans, "The One With the Prom Video") in which apparently Phoebe reveals a theory that people, like lobsters, have a mate for life. On this basis, aforementioned gf decided that a plastic lobster would make a delightful romantic present. This opens another rich source of information - where does one buy a life size plastic lobster? Not as easy as you might think it seems! She rang round lots of butchers and fishmongers asking if any of them would sell her one, and then she finally found from one of them that she needed to visit the abbatoir that we all live quite close to, where she would find a butchers' accessory shop (I'm serious here) that should have them. In the end, they didn't have one, but they were able to obtain one that she later went and collected. If they wrote it in fiction, nobody would believe it...
