Part of it I think is rooted in my general hatred of people doing things they want to do and using 'charity' as their justification. e.g. "I'm doing a bungee jump for charity", "I'm doing a parachute jump for charity", "I'm swimming the channel for charity". No you're not, you're doing it because you want to. Dave recognised this, and also agreed that he didn't like being bullied into handing over someone wearing a fake jolly demeanour and a badly fitting bear suit. Where is this going? Well, one of the things I cited was the British Legion's Poppy Appeal as a charity fund raising drive which is brilliantly effective. And having had this conversation I went out into the street and saw this truck driving by. I don't where he got this poppy, but what a great way to show your support when you're stuck up in the cab all day.
