In the morning though, I spent a few minutes looking at the chimney stack in my current bedroom. I don't think the fire has been lit in the eleven years that we've lived here, but I do know that it has problems wit intermittent leakage, as the room can occasionally fill with smoke when the fire is lit in the room below. I did some investigating, and the draw through the chimney seems really good, with smoke from an extinguished candle shooting skywards with alacrity. It also looks very clean, leading me to think that it might be worth risking a firelighter in the grate just to see what the smoke does. With respect to the leakage, I'm encouraged to see that the mortar in the centre right of the frame is in very poor condition indeed, and may be where the smoke is coming through. That being the case, it looks repairable without having to send a small child up the chimney stack with a pointing trowel.
