The life-belt is flanked by the Union Jack and the Royal flag with rampant lions, and the roses and thistles of England and Scotland. The verse underneath reads: "Across the sea, across the land, I fain would clasp your friendly hand, / But since between us rolls the sea, I send a greeting card to thee. The verso, with rubber post stamp for 29 September 1910 from Helensburgh, shows a handwritten message to Mrs J F Swan of Waitara, from her brother Andrew.
