Vanuit de overtuiging dat als de openlucht gezond is voor zieke kinderen, ontstond het idee dat dit eveneens gezond zou zijn voor gezonde kinderen. Doctors sent physically and socially fragil children to an open-air school on the coast or in the woods for a cure of healthy food, medical care, physical activity and education in the open air. The conviction that fresh air is healthy for sick children prompted the idea that it would be beneficial for healthy children as well.
