At this time he was a mechanic on plane motors for the Glenn Martin Company. In 1917 he attended U.C. Berkley School of Military Aeronautics, and in 1918 he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Aviation Section of the American Expeditionary Forces serving in France until his return to the U.
