Keywords: Lieutenant Colonel Yujiro Yutani.jpg Australian War Memorial AWM catalog number 125976 Sourced from http //www awm gov au/database/collection asp Copyright The AWM record for this photo states that the copyright status is 'clear' The photo was taken in 1946 AWM Caption Lieutenant Colonel Lt Col Yujiro Yutani Commanding Officer of the Kempeitai Japanese secret police on Timor standing at attention behind a barbed wire fence at the prisoner of war POW compound Lt Col Yutani was one of twenty two Japanese who were tried in Darwin in March and April 1946 for war crimes against allied POWs Lt Col Yutani was accused of the ill treatment of a British POW and an Australian POW in April-May 1943 as well as the murders of Australian POW TX3282 Corporal Cpl J H Armstrong 2/40 Battalion and British POW Gunner Gnr Martin 79 Light Anti Aircraft Battery who were executed on Lt Col Yutani's order at Airnona Timor on or about 12 June 1943 He was found guilty on all charges and on 29 April 1946 was sentenced to death by shooting for the murders of Cpl Armstrong and Gnr Martin Lt Col Yutani unsuccessfully appealed against the sentence on the grounds that the capital punishment is unreasonable and excessive and that the order to execute Cpl Armstrong and Gnr Martin was issued as a lawful one and obeyed by me as an operational order The sentence was carried out on 1 August 1946 at Rabaul Of the twenty two Japanese tried in Darwin nine others were found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour with the maximum sentence being ten years Post-Work W Wolny Higher resolution versions of this image may be ordered through the AWM Website at www awm gov au PD-Australia Battle of Timor People executed by shooting Yutani People and barbed wire At attention Prisoners of war in World War II Black and white photographs Attribution metadata from licensed image |
