Founded in the 1870s, Jackfish was originally a small fishing village. However, in 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway, whose tracks you can see in the far right of the photograph, began using Jackfish as a distribution hub for construction supplies bound for other parts of the country. Because coal was the primary product moved through the village, the arrival of diesel locomotives in the 1940s brought an end to Jackfish's heydey, and the village was eventually abandoned.
