An intra-polypal tentacle is seen in section within the dorsal directive entocceleand one within the exocoele on each side of it. The mesenteriesin the genus Pucillopora are only in the J^dwardsia-sta^e ofdevelopment, i. e. four pairs complete, two pairs incomplete. Thestomodaeal wall of retracted polrps frequently presents, as hererepresented, a cruciform appearance in transverse sections. Ficr. 4. Text Appearing After Image: Transverse Bection through the stomodaeal region of a retracted polyp■with only one intrapolypal tentacle, which is situated within theexocoele to the right of the dorsal directive entoccele. The presenceof the intrapolypal tentacle has disturbed the regularity of themesenteries and stomodseum in the retracted condition. Moiijliology of the Mwireporuiia. 471 remaining polyps are quite normal, having twelve tentacles —six inner slightly larger than six outer. In the HawaiianPoeilloj)ore3 the proportion of modified to normal polyps isabout one in twelve, at)d the former are distributed irregularlyover any region of the colony. From an examination ofserial transverse sections there is no question that at theirorigin in the disk the protrusions correspond in position withthe tentacles, only the direction of growth is inwards insteadof outwards.
