As part of Section 5 of Indiana's I-69 Corridor Project, State Road 37 is being upgraded to interstate standards in Monroe and Morgan counties. In addition, the formerly median-divided, 4-lane highway is having a third lane added in each direction where it passes through the city of Bloomington, and continuing north to Sample Road, a total distance of about 11 miles. In the Bloomington urban zone, in place of a grassy median, a concrete barrier wall [pictured] is being constructed instead to separate the opposing traffic lanes. This measure will allow Interstate 69 to fit within a right-of-way similar to that of SR 37, thereby saving dozens of homes and businesses, which otherwise would have been subject to razing in an expanded right-of-way.
