| Keywords: Fred C Palmer crowd at Herne Bay.jpg Postcard photo of a crowd listening to music at the Tower Gardens near the Clock Tower Herne Bay Kent dated 1910-1913 The photographer was Fred C Palmer of Tower Studio Herne Bay Kent who is believed to have died 1936-1939 This photo may be contemporary with the 1913 photograph File Fred C Palmer 005b jpg It is dated 1910-1913 because the Grand Pier Pavilion in the background was completed in 1910 and the photo was taken before WWI started in 1914 ;Points of interest The postcard is titled Band Playing From the Connaught but it is not known whether the bandsmen were from a ship called the Connaught or whether From the Connaught was the name of a melody The pier tram can be seen on the right of the Grand Pier Pavilion A small group of suffragettes with bicycles can be seen at bottom left possibly about to hand out leaflets Border The remaining border of this image is important for researchers of this photographer Some photographers trimmed their images more than others and Palmer has a reputation for producing smaller postcards than other early 20th century UK photographers He took his own photos developed them in-house onto postcard-backed photographic paper and trimmed them himself It is worth adding that during hand-developing the border is actively masked with equipment which both crops the picture and causes the white frame or border to appear on the paper This frame is part of the design and is one of the reasons why the quality of Palmer's work is so interesting and why there is an article and category for him on English Wiki Researchers need to see exactly where the edge of the postcard is It's also important to be able to see that this extraordinary tableaux vivants picture that contains so much is really just a postcard Thank you for taking the time to read this Scan of original postcard in my possession 1910-1913 Fred C Palmer died 1936-1939 out of copyright PD-old-70-1923 Herne Bay Kent Fred C Palmer of Herne Bay | ||||
