| Keywords: Everything for the garden (16389033391).jpg EVERYTHING FOR THE GAKDEH Foirewotrdl <br> 1915 Looms Up- <br> The harbinger let us fervently hope of an era of peace and prosperity for all the world Our own <br> country ” thanks to the wisdom and foresight of its founders ” has been providentially preserved <br> from the devastating effects of war with all its attendant evils and has steadfastly busied itself in achieving victories of peace blessed <br> by abundant crops of the fruits of the earth successfully harvested in due season <br> In order to reap in due season we must also sow at the appointed time and that now is close upon us Once again the great miracle <br> has been wrought and the earth in its journey around the sun has arrived at that stage of it which we call Spring ” the great planting <br> season of the year ' <br> We have therefore much pleasure in placing this our catalogue of <br> EVERYTHING for the GARDEN for 1915 <br> in your hands and in doing so we wish to point out a few of its <br> principal features On the front cover ” following our usual practise <br> we show another of the famous Gardens of the Great viz <br> The Pond Garden at Hampton Court in England This famous <br> palace first the residence of a great cardinal and then of a succession <br> of kings and queens who were all ardent lovers of gardens and <br> gardening has within its boundaries beauty spots that are perhaps un- <br> equalled in the whole world Hampton Court has several gardens <br> both formal and natural besides its noble park its famous radi- <br> ating avenues of trees centuries old and its canals and fountains <br> The garden we illustrate is one of the smallest but at the same time <br> one of the most interesting on the place Now known as - The <br> Pond Garden ' ' it was laid out by Cardinal Wolsey shortly after his <br> return from a visit to Italy and it combines in a very pleasing <br> manner the formality of the Italian style with the flowery profusion <br> favored in the north of Europe It is undoubtedly a happy com- <br> bination and we commend it to our friends who own garden plots <br> of but moderate size Such a garden might quickly be duplicated <br> in this country by using such climbers as Honeysuckle Virginia <br> Creeper and Clematis for the walls and substituting the rapid- <br> growing Privet for the slow-growing ancient Yew for the bower and <br> the topiary work A moderate expenditure in addition for Roses <br> Peonies and Hardy Phlox etc etc and for seeds to raise flowers <br> for the lawn beds would in a few years produce a Pond Garden of <br> great beauty <br> In this/ onnection we may mention that we have this year gotten <br> out a popular edition of our book Henderson's Picturesque Gar- <br> dens which is full of ideas and suggestions to the garden lover <br> See page 199 On the back cover we show one of those rare child <br> pictures only possible when taken by a parent or near relation <br> The photograph was sent to us as many of our pictures are by <br> one of our customers and shows her little daughter enjoying the <br> perfume of the beautiful Cardinal Rose <br> The various Seeds Plants Bulbs Tools and Implements illus- <br> trated and described in the inside pages are of the same high quality <br> and excellence which it has always been the settled policy of our <br> house to supply during three generations Our business was founded <br> in 1847 by PETER HENDERSON and it is now carried on by <br> Charles Henderson the present head of the house son of the founder <br> and by Peter Henderson and Howard M Henderson grandsons <br> To some of our friends it may seem superfluous to mention these <br> particulars year by year but our business is distinctively a pro- <br> gressive one and this catalogue is annually placed in the hands of <br> thousands of new friends as well as hundreds of thousands of old <br> ones Sincerely yours <br> y jL C AjL A V § \A <br> President <br> Jan 1st 1915 PETER HENDERSON CO NEW YORK <br> Idfttn PICTURESQUE GARDENS by Charles Henderson Mirrora £r lf A 43874794 149634 78295 Page 2 Text http //www biodiversitylibrary org/page/43874794 c1915 10 5962/bhl title 78295 Henry G Gilbert Nursery and Seed Trade Catalog Collection ;
