The event Guest Speaker was Ms. Barbara Wilson, a member of the Inupiat tribe whose native lands are located above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, explained the customs and traditions of her people, accompanied by a colorful slide show of photos. An original poem in honor of Native Americans was read by the author, Christian Wilder, a 5th grade student of the Vilseck Elementary School as well during the course of the one hour ceremony. Opening and closing the event was BMEDDAC Col. Andrew Powell, who presented the organizers and special guests with certificates in thanks and recognition of their support. National Native American Heritage Month begins Nov. 1 each year to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of this country's original inhabitants, explorers and settlers. Throughout the Army's history, Native Americans have served valiantly and with distinction in times of peace and war, while also fighting for the right to be an equal part of the nation. We recognize their rich heritage and honor their spirit and true devotion to this land. This year's theme is "Serving Our Nations."
