Keywords: road outdoor View of the north side of 1100-block Douglas Street in Victoria, BC, looking north towards View Street, circa-1977. The large building in the center was the main, Douglas Street entrance to the Eaton's Department Store. The building was originally the St. George Hotel (1862), later becoming the Driard House Hotel (1871). The upper portion of the hotel burned in 1882 but was rebuilt and reopened in 1883. In 1886, the hotel was extended over the Victoria Theatre (1883) and a grander hotel entrance was built facing Douglas Street (see above). In 1892, a new, grand, 6-storey Driard Hotel was built on Broad Street (the old hotel was renamed the Imperial Hotel). The hotel was partially damaged by the great fire of 1910, at which time was purchased by merchant David Spencer for his department store. In 1948, Spencer sold his department store compexes in Victoria and Vancouver to the T. Eaton Company. The entire block seen above was demolished in 1989 for the construction of the Eaton's Centre mall development (1989-90)(now the Bay Centre).
