Keywords: 7/11/16 Here I am in Noatak National Preserve, away from highways, smog, noise pollution, and city lights. Before I got here, I imagined I would see streams of caribou. I was prepared at all moments for an encounter with a brown bear. I hoped to get pictures of moose wading through the willows. I’ve been here for two days now, quietly waiting, but I’ll I’ve seen are some birds and insects. Where are all the animals? -Cait … 7/25/16 Looking back at this journal entry, I mapped how much of the park we actually saw (roughly 7,000 acres). At first that seemed like a lot, but did you know Noatak National Preserve is in the center of over 18 million continuous acres of protected lands? With so much space to roam, it’s no wonder Cait and I missed the critters. We only saw 0.039% of the park lands, barely a thumbprint on the vast landscape. -Julia (Nakolik - Waypoint 5) noatak national preserve virtual visit
