Among the dignitaries attending were U.S. Ambassador to Haiti and the Haitian Minister of Public Works, Marcel Daumec. Haitian Army engineers called the U.S. for help last summer when an unusual rainfall caused the lake to rise and virtually isolate the southern tip of Haiti. The single highway access to the area was flooded and a result of the western side of the southern peninsula was isolated. A Seabee Detachment from Amphibious Construction Battalion Two (ACB-2), was rushed to the area with supplies to build a pontoon bridge across the flooded sections and improve six miles of road in the bridge approaches. The ACB-2 Unit encountered a two-acre floating island of debris blocking access channels to the bridge. The “Can Do” Seabees blasted the “islands” into sections and then used pontoons and propulsion unit to push the debris to the shoreline. Approval and funds for the project were provided by the International Cooperation Administration, though a cooperative arrangement with the Haitian Government, to the U.S. Navy Department.
